The Only Solution to Combine Coding
Resources, Calculator, & Advice
In anesthesia coding if there is a case
to repair a closed femur neck fracture, then as per the options available now
you only have code 820.8 with the description of unspecified fracture. When
ICD-10 comes into effect although you will be able to report unspecified
fractures, coding will get complicated.
When ICD-10 comes into effect you will
be using category S72.00 for an unspecified fracture of the femoral neck. With
this you will need to add sixth and seventh digits to specify your procedure. By
adding the sixth digit it can be reported where exactly the patient has the
fracture e.g. right or left. It can also be used to report if it is
unspecified. You will need to report it twice if the fracture is bilateral,
whereas the seventh digit will be used to report the stage of the encounter. Under
ICD-10 it is this seventh digit that will bring about a significant difference
when reporting for femur fractures. You will also need to check the notes given
by the anesthesiologist or surgeon to locate the place of the fracture. Lastly,
you will need to identify the type of fracture. Under ICD-10 an unspecified
open fracture of the femoral neck will be very similar to that for the closed
fracture, which is also a major point of difference from ICD-9.
